Very seldom does a new product come from the computing industry that can make a strong impact on the legal profession. However, all that is soon to change with the advent of the Compaq Tablet PC TC1000 from Hewlett-Packard! Without question this new and exciting PC will soon be turning heads in the legal community, as well as turning your office workload into a new and more functional way to work!
In one word, the new TC1000 is incredible! It's a must see it to believe it product which at first glance is a laptop, a slate-style tablet and a desktop! Its slick and innovative design, which uses Microsoft's' Windows XP pro Tablet software, as well as new versions of software designed specifically for the Tablets handwriting capabilities, are bound to revolutionize the way that all lawyers now work with computers.
The unit outperforms and stands out in the crowd of Tablets by being far ahead of the others in its field. It's a 3-pound powerhouse loaded with a 1 GHz processor, 4-5 hour battery life, a built in high speed 802.11b wireless support, a full-sized keyboard and the ultra-cool flip screen that easily and quickly converts from a slim laptop configuration to a digital writing pad that is approximately 8.5' x 11' in screen size! With a stroke of the included digital pen you can make handwritten notes, as well as highlights of them, document annotations and all note-taking edits on the flip screen with ease. Just imagine the possibilities of marking up or editing a document directly on your flip screen, then forwarding that document to your office or others via the network, the Internet, or over a wireless connection. The possibilities are endless! With the TC1000 never again is there a need or requirement for typing! This alone will probably be a big selling point to the older, senior counselors who can now use a computer in a handwriting environment! Now they can save their own notes in their own handwriting or even convert them to typed text for use in several other applications. Also, there is a savings on notepads. Any and all handwritten meeting notes will replace any notepad, but with the added functionality of being able to e-mail them via the optional wireless modem even when you're in court! The most important feature to your firm's decision makers is the fact that the units are cost effective being in the same price range as that of a good laptop, but with added functions and features that today's laptop cannot emulate.
The amazing design of this unit had me in awe! Without a doubt the clarity and sharpness of the TC1000 screen made the unit the best in its class, not to mention that the pen would continue to write as smooth as silk on the Tablet. I'm guessing that the reason is due to the fact that the screen is made from tough automotive glass. This is a real plus for those of us who tend to press a bit too hard when we write with a pen! Other units I've compared don't stack up to this screen, most being much too mushy with a lot of give, akin to the normal laptop screens!
As for usage ' well let's just say that I can't put mine down for a second and the legal applications are falling into place, even as we speak! The unit is an ideal fit for a busy attorney who needs to be marking up documents, or just taking notes for a deposition, meeting or the courtroom. The nice thing about having a handy Tablet in court is the fact that you can stay in the judge's good graces without the annoying clickity clacking that is associated with computer usage in court! The unit is also very compact allowing ease of use in taking the unit along with you and never having second thoughts about carrying a computer along. The whole package in its modern designed carrying case weights under a mere 4 pounds.
At the present time, many of the legal software publishers are redesigning their long standing programs for pen-based Tablet usage. Live-Note's real time transcription application, as well as Summation's Litigation Support product, Concord- ance, CaseMap, ProLaw, and the new release of Microsoft Word' 11 will soon be opening up a new and creative world for attorneys to create and manipulate all legal documents.
Overall, the TC1000 has not only met my expectations for a Tablet PC but has far exceeded them. The keyboard works well with the unit, albeit the area is a small one, without much in the way of resting room for your wrists. The slim design makes this unit much easier to carry and handle, with virtually no noise coming from the unit, which does have a fan that will come on occasionally after prolonged usage. All in all, the Compaq TC1000 Tablet is the best of both slate and convertible worlds. Another most important factor for your consideration is that the unit is well priced around $1,700 and is much cheaper than most of the first generation Tablet PC's! Without a doubt for quality and dependability the TC1000 is the unit to own and well deserved Kudos' go to HP for this wonderfully designed PC of the future. I'm just glad that Moses didn't have these Tablets or we might have ended up with 20 to 50 commandments all hand written!
