At an estimated $15.5 billion ' an increase of 28.1% from 2003's first quarter ' this year's estimated first-quarter e-commerce accounted for 1.9% of all first-quarter retailing, which the U.S. Census Bureau last month guessed totaled $834.8 billion, a nearly 9% rise from the same quarter last year.
That was the biggest first-quarter cha-ching! since the Bureau began tracking estimated quarterly e-commerce in the late 1990s.
e-Spending through the first 3 months of this year was down ' about 11% this time ' repeating a general fourth-to-first quarter trend that has held since 1999. Overall first-quarter retailing fell nearly 9% from the fourth quarter; all first-quarter spending ' e- and brick-and-mortar ' has traditionally been less than fourth-quarter commerce, home on the calendar to the year-end holiday gift season.
National estimated fourth-quarter retail e-commerce sales totaled $17.2 billion, an increase of 25.1% from the fourth quarter a year earlier.
Census Bureau e-commerce and retail estimates are not adjusted for seasonal, holiday and trading-day differences, the government notes.
Estimated second-quarter retail e-commerce sales figures are scheduled for release Aug. 20.
The Census Bureau considers e-commerce to be any sale of services or goods conducted when a buyer places an order, or negotiates sale price and terms via Internet, extranet, electronic data interchange (EDI), e-mail or other online channel. Payment needn't be made online.
