Business Owner Sentenced for Embezzling Pension Funds and Tax Fraud
Gary Chris Pappas, Jr. was sentenced to 3 years' probation, including 10 months of home detention, and ordered to pay more than $65,000 in restitution for theft of pension funds and for tax fraud. Pappas was the owner and operator of Pro Auto Parts, Inc., which was a Denver auto parts supply business. Pappas allegedly embezzled funds from the company's employee pension plan from August 1999 through January of 2000, and failed to forward health insurance premiums paid by employees. According to the indictment, Pappas also failed to pay more than $61,000 in employee payroll taxes in 1999 and filed a false tax refund claim on his 1999 federal income tax return. The case was investigated by the IRS Criminal Investigation Division, and the U.S. Department of Labor, Employee Benefits Security Administration.
