Implementing Matter-Centric Architectures in Document Management Systems

Several issues face those migrating from traditional document management systems to Matter-Centric Content Management Architectures. This first part of a two-part will series will review some of the key ones for IT professionals.

What is a Matter-Centric Architecture?

Modern Document Management Systems (DMS) ' or also referred to as Content Management Systems (CMS) because of their ability to store content beyond traditional word processor documents and spreadsheets, or Enterprise Content Management Systems (ECM) spanning geographical, physical, technical, and organizational boundaries) ' support the organization of content into structured objects, typically called “WorkSpaces.” WorkSpaces can be dedicated to a specific client, matter, project, product, person, department, practice group, region, office, or other conceptual unit within an organization. For clarity in this discussion, we will assume we are talking about WorkSpaces that have been built for individual matters (which provides the matter-centric component of our discussion), but many of the concepts discussed here also apply to WorkSpaces that have been built for other types of conceptual units.
