Rabies-Infected Kidney Deaths Prompt Suit
The families of two people who died after receiving donated organs from a rabies-infected donor have filed suit against their doctors and hospitals, claiming that lack of information about the donor prevented them from giving informed consent to the transplants.
Fifty-year-old Cheri Jean Wells and 18-year-old Joshua Hightower died a month after receiving organs from Arkansas resident William Beed Jr. in 2004. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), these deaths were the first incidences of rabies infection through organ transplant ever reported.
