Union Treasurer Sentenced to 10 Years for Fraud
The former treasurer of the Washington Teachers' Union was sentenced to ten years in prison and ordered to pay over $4.2 million in restitution for his role in a conspiracy to defraud the union, according to the DOJ. The fraud began with the use of union credit cards for personal purchases, but later became more complex as the conspirators created a sham company to cover their fraud and to launder their proceeds. According to the DOJ, the fraud went undetected for years because of the union's failure to submit audits to its national parent organization and other accounting irregularities. (United States v. Baxter, No. 03-00516, D.D.C).
