As I mentioned in my last Note from the Editor, this month marks the premiere of a new column for managing partners of law firms. 'Corner Office,' written by Mel Morrione, will provide insight into the world of managing partners and how their role impacts, among other things, marketing, business development, communications, growth and professional development. This month, Mel, who joins our Board of Editors, provides an overview of the role of the managing partner.
I am also pleased to announce that beginning in February, the 'Place to Network' column will be written by Christy Burke, founder of Burke & Company. Christy is a specialist in marketing, public relations and organizational dynamics. She has a strong background in helping CEOs improve business performance. We welcome Christy as a columnist and a future member of our Board of Editors.
With this issue, we say goodbye to Olivia Fox Cabane as a regular columnist. For just over a year, Olivia has written the 'Place to Network' column. Her articles were thoughtful and provided expert insight into the tactical side of networking. Olivia will continue to be a member of our Board and will continue to contribute to MLF.
I also wanted to make our readership aware of a new book written by our Board member Ed Poll: More Secrets of The Business of Law: Ways to Be More Effective, Efficient and Profitable. This book covers a lot of ground, including a very informed look at selecting coaches, a great couple of chapters on client service and establishing and nurturing client relationships. It is a great read. This book is great for solos, small, mid-size and large firm practitioners. To purchase copies of the book, you can contact Ed Poll at 800-837-5880 or by e-mail at [email protected].
Well, I'm going back to work on finalizing the MLF 50. Stay tuned. And remember, there will be a special issue of Marketing The Law Firm with the MLF 50 coming in mid-November.

In Rockwell v. Despart, the New York Supreme Court, Third Department, recently revisited a recurring question: When may a landowner seek judicial removal of a covenant restricting use of her land?
The Article 8 opt-in election adds an additional layer of complexity to the already labyrinthine rules governing perfection of security interests under the UCC. A lender that is unaware of the nuances created by the opt in (may find its security interest vulnerable to being primed by another party that has taken steps to perfect in a superior manner under the circumstances.
