California Children's Hospital Units Closed After Bacterial Infection Outbreak

At East Los Angeles' White Memorial Medical Center, several babies and two older children were infected in or around November and December 2006 with Pseudomonas aeruginosa, a common bacteria that can be deadly to those with impaired immune systems. One of the infants apparently died from the bacterial infection, which hospital personnel surmised came from improperly sterilized laryngoscope blades used to insert breathing tubes. Four other infant deaths at the Medical Center in December might also be related to the bacteria, but the facility has stated that further investigation is needed before a determination of the causes of those deaths can be made.

Soon after the bacterial contamination was discovered the hospital announced it was implementing several precautions. These included giving antibiotics to all infants that had been in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) since Nov. 30, 2006; closing the NICU; removing critically ill infants to a special isolation area; placing babies that tested negative for the bacteria in separate areas; having nurses wear full protective coverings to reduce risk of cross-contamination; reviewing and changing standard procedures for cleaning and disinfecting laryngoscope blades; and reviewing all departments' infection control policies.
