Lawyer Wins Writing Contest
Lenor C. Marquis, an associate in the Litigation Department of the New York office of the international law firm Steptoe & Johnson LLP, recently won the 2007 New York Law Journal's fiction contest. (ALM, the company that publishes this newsletter, publishes the Journal.)
Marquis won for her story, Sue Generous, about an immigration attorney having a horrible day. It was the Journal's seventh fiction contest.
'Writing fiction is a rewarding hobby, and I am pleased that others enjoyed reading the story as much as I enjoyed writing it,' Marquis said.
Marquis holds a J.D. from New York University School of Law, and a bachelor of science degree from Cornell University. She is also on the Board of Directors of Project FAIR, a collaborative, New York City-based project working toward greater economic justice for low-income and homeless New Yorkers.
Former SEC Director Joins Firm's DC Office
Simpson Thacher & Bartlett LLP announced in November that Peter H. Bresnan, deputy director of the Securities and Exchange Commission's Division of Enforcement, would join the firm.
Bresnan will be a partner in the firm's Washington, DC, office and a member of the firm's Government and Internal Investigations practice.
During his 12-year tenure at the SEC, Bresnan led a number of major enforcement actions, including as the SEC's lead trial counsel in the WorldCom case. Recently, he was responsible for the Commission's actions against Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. As the interim head of the SEC's Boston office, Bresnan ran the SEC's market-timing and late-trading cases. He has also led significant Foreign Corrupt Practices Act matters.
CT Lawyer Leading Real Estate Counselors
Frank L. Baker III if Robinson & Cole's Stamford, CT, office, was recently elected chairman of The Counselors of Real Estate ('CRE') for 2008-2009. The CRE, founded in 1953, was established exclusively for real estate advisors who provide intelligent, unbiased, and trusted advice for a client or employer. The organization serves 1,100 members worldwide.
Kaye Scholer Lawyer Makes Worth List
Kaye Scholer attorney Arlene Harris was listed in Worth magazine's '100 Top Lawyers' feature in the December edition.
Harris, of the firm's New York City office, co-chairs the Trusts & Estates Practice Group.
To pick designees, Worth's editors weighed lawyers who focus on trust and estates, philanthropy, elder care, matrimonial and other areas of private practice, a Kaye Scholer news release said.
The firm was also recently honored by The Legal Aid Society, which granted Kaye Scholer the Pro Bono Award for outstanding service to the Society and its clients. The firm has a record of successful pro bono representation at administrative hearings over the years for Social Security disability insurance and other matters on behalf of disabled clients.
Each case is staffed by two associates, including summer associates, and supervised by a senior associate and a partner mentor, according to a news release on the Kaye Scholer Web site.
Thelen Super Lawyers Named
Thelen Reid Brown Raysman & Steiner attorneys Dennis C. Cavanaugh, Brian J. Donnell, Gregory B. Faulkner, Marc B. Friedman, Beverly W. Garofalo and Norman H. Roos, of the firm's Hartford, CT, office were recently named 2008 New England Super Lawyers by Law & Politics magazine.
Cavanaugh, Donnell and Faulkner were recognized for their work in construction litigation; Friedman for real estate; Garofalo for work in labor and employment law; and Roos for securities and corporate finance.
They'll be named in a special edition of New England Super Lawyers magazine. Connecticut-based 2008 Super Lawyers will be featured in the February editions of Connecticut Magazine, according to Thelen.
MO Attorney Wins Bankruptcy Award
Larry Frazen, a partner in Bryan Cave's Kansas City, MO, office, recently won the Michael R. Roser Excellence in Bankruptcy Practice Award.
The Award, conferred by the Missouri Bar Association's Commercial Law Committee, singles out a lawyer who has shown the highest excellence standard in bankruptcy practice, made distinctive contributions to bankruptcy law development and appreciation, and has contributed outstandingly to the practice of bankruptcy administration.
Frazen has written and spoken extensively on bankruptcy and reorganization for legal, business and trade associations.
