In the arena of technology, it is hard to forget those traumatic events when the whole world seemed to change on a dime. Nowhere is this felt as extremely as in the legal industry where document production requirements are time critical. How do you help your staff transition to Word 2007 so that they may reach the same productivity levels as before?
Users who will be learning Word 2007 as their first word processing program will have an easier time; they do not have anything to unlearn. Unfortunately the most sophisticated users will have a harder time adjusting and this upgrade may give them quite a jolt. This article provides some tips to lessen the anxiety and drama potentially associated with this migration.
Planning
The Word 2007 interface is very different from previous versions. Although most features work the same way, the visual difference is striking. Recognize that this is a major change for your users. Like with any other major change, planning is the most critical phase of the project. Understand what your users will be experiencing. My first car had the
gearshift as part of the steering wheel. The turn signals were on the right and the windshield wiper controls were on individual buttons. In my next car, the gearshift was between the seats; the wipers were on the right and the turn signals were on the left. For the first two weeks of driving that car, I always turned on the wipers when I wanted to make a turn. I still knew how to drive; I just had to adjust to these controls being in different places. This analogy illustrates how users are likely to react when they first start working with Word 2007. Initially, they will be disoriented and possibly upset, but eventually their brains and fingers will get used to the changes and they'll be able to adjust to a productive level.
