89 Individuals Face Medicare Fraud Scheme-Related Charges

On May 14, 2013, the Department of Justice (DOJ) announced its sixth Medicare fraud nationwide takedown since the inception of the Medicare Fraud Strike Force in March 2007. The takedown included charges against 89 individuals for their respective roles in approximately $223 million in alleged false billings, principally for medically unnecessary treatments and treatments that were never administered.

Consistent with the locations of operations for the Strike Force, charges were filed in the following cities across the country: Baton Rouge, LA; Brooklyn, NY; Chicago; Detroit; Houston; Los Angeles; Miami; New Orleans; and Tampa, FL. The 89 people charged as part of the takedown include a mix of healthcare company owners, nurses, doctors, and other licensed medical professionals.

While the prosecutions stem from a host of alleged schemes tied to assorted medical services and treatments, they principally allege fraud in connection with home healthcare services. The charges levied include a host of healthcare fraud-related counts, such as conspiracy to commit healthcare fraud, money laundering, and anti-kickback statute violations.

The Strike Force, a joint effort of DOJ and the Department of Health and Human Services, includes investigators on the local, state and federal levels. As part of its press release, DOJ noted that, to date, charges had been levied by the Strike Force against more than 1,500 individuals in connection with fraud schemes surpassing $5 billion.
