<i>BREAKING NEWS</i>Justices Decide to Stay Out of Same-Sex Marriage Cases

The U.S. Supreme Court, defying conventional wisdom, declined on Oct. 6 to resolve the nation's constitutional debate over whether states may ban same-sex marriages.

The High Court'turned away seven petitions for review from five states whose same-sex marriage bans had been struck down by three federal circuit courts of appeals this year.

The immediate impact of the court's denial of review in those cases is that stays issued pending Supreme Court action would be lifted and same-sex marriages would be permitted in those states whose bans were invalidated by the lower courts.
