BY ALM Staff
November 02, 2014

Editor's Note: Legal Analytics combines data and software to predict the behaviors and outcomes that different legal strategies will produce, enabling companies and their legal counsel to set litigation strategy and budgets and win cases. In this Q&A, Rich Baer , Senior Vice President and General Counsel, Liberty Media; John Squires, Partner, Perkins Coie; and Owen Byrd , Chief Evangelist and General Counsel, Lex Machina, discuss the impact of Legal Analytics on the legal profession and how it can be used to gain an edge in the highly competitive business and practice of law.

Q. How has being a lawyer changed over the past 10 years with today's unprecedented access to information?

A. John Squires: Access to information has dramatically changed the practice of law over the last 10 years, but probably no more or less than it has changed every other profession or industry. If anything, the immense amount of information available and knowable across every aspect of life places a higher value upon the type of decision-making that lawyers are uniquely trained to perform. (And yes, I realize the irony of a lawyer making the case for lawyers).
