Mayer Brown announced its hire of cybersecurity and data privacy counsel'Kendall Burman'in Washington, DC, from her role as deputy general counsel for strategic initiatives at the U.S. Department of Commerce.

Venable has hired a top cybersecurity official from the White House to become managing director of cybersecurity services at the law firm's Washington, DC, office.

Ari Schwartz, who is not an attorney, recently helped to shape national policies on cybersecurity and technology during the two years he spent at the White House.

While there, he coordinated network defense cyber policy, including infrastructure and network protection, as well as dealing with supply chains, information sharing and cybersecurity standards, according to a statement from the law firm.

The hire is an example of how law firms that have practice groups related to technology'such as in cybersecurity or privacy' often have a multidisciplinary team in place that includes non-lawyers. These professionals help the firm 'blend legal advice with tactical services,' Mark Yacano, who is a global practice leader in managed legal solutions at Major, Lindsey & Africa, explained. Venerable legal research provider LexisNexis has acquired data analytics company Lex Machina in a move to add technologies to allow users to better understand the legal landscape and their challenges, the company announced on Nov. 23.

Previously focused on IP law, the acquisition will provide Lex Machina with the resources necessary to expand its analytics algorithm to other practice areas. The acquisition also paves the way for LexisNexis to make those tools available to its base of research users, company officials said.
