A multifaceted network of 3D virtual worlds known as the metaverse has long been viewed as a place for social connection, but many are now also envisioning it as a space where professional services can thrive.

Now that Washington, DC-based Arent Fox has become the first major law firm to buy a digital plot of land and open a virtual office in the metaverse, a host of other professionals and corporations are likely to follow suit.

For law firms, real estate companies and corporations, buying property in the metaverse so early on could go one of two ways: giving them a crucial advantage in an increasingly digital economy, or becoming a decision they'll regret if the concept fails to take off.
