Antitrust Enforcement Agencies Target AI Companies
U.S. antitrust enforcement agencies may file complaints against the biggest companies advancing artificial intelligence, legal experts said in reaction to news reports of a handshake agreement between the Department of Justice and Federal Trade Commission.
The DOJ has agreed to investigate Nvidia while the FTC probes Microsoft and OpenAI, the New York Times reported, citing two unnamed sources with knowledge of the matter.
"When you have two agencies, this is the only way to do it," William E. Kovacic, a George Washington University Law School professor who specializes in antitrust, said in an interview with ALM. "It would be absurd to have both agencies looking at the same companies."
