Topical Research: Your Input Sought

By Joe Danowsky, Editor-in-Chief
December 22, 2003

For possible future articles, I'd like to gather reader input on a number of topics; here are two. Please be in touch if you or an interested colleague would be a good research contact for either topic. (If you have authoritative knowledge and would like to write on the topic, better yet!)

#1 Compensating Specialist Partners

Does your firm have a partner whose practice area differs completely from the rest of the firm, eg, a human rights lawyer in a firm that specializes in stockholder lawsuits? If so, does your firm determine that individual's compensation on the same basis as other partners, or as a separate line of business (like of-counsel compensation)? Does the approach used raise any philosophical or practical problems for the firm?

#2 Conducting Business in Foreign Currencies

Does your firm bill or accept payment for its services in currencies other than the US dollar? With what kinds of currency-related accounting, software, and financial planning issues has your firm contended? If you have operations in Europe, are you going out of your way to deal in euros rather than individual national currencies?

Please send your thoughts and contact information directly to me at [email protected]. Thanks!
