It is with profound sadness that, as Editor-in-Chief of Marketing the Law Firm, I announce the passing of our esteemed Editorial Board member, colleague and friend, Jay M. Jaffe.
Jay was a true visionary whose instincts and thought leadership about legal marketing earned him the reputation as an industry pioneer and one of our country's foremost trusted legal advisers.
Over the last 34 years, Jay developed and grew a powerhouse PR agency devoted exclusively to the business needs of law firms ' with a group of highly talented professionals located across the country who collaborate as a virtual business. Today, Jaffe PR services clients from some of the world's largest law firms as well as prominent mid-sized firms and well-respected niche boutiques throughout the country.
Always striving to stay ahead of cutting-edge technology and its effective use, Jay and his beloved Jaffe PR have been recognized as one of the “500 Fastest-Growing Private Companies in the United States” by Inc. Magazine, and one of the “100 Most Tech-Savvy Small Businesses in America” by Small Business Computing magazine.
For his professional accomplishments, Jay was honored in 2010 by PR News when he was inducted into the “PR People Hall of Fame” at the National Press Club in Washington, DC, and was named to the “100 Legal Consultants You Need to Know” list by Lawdragon.

The Article 8 opt-in election adds an additional layer of complexity to the already labyrinthine rules governing perfection of security interests under the UCC. In 1987, a unanimous Court of Appeals reaffirmed the vitality of the "stranger to the deed" rule, which holds that if a grantor executes a deed to a grantee purporting to create an easement in a third party, the easement is invalid. Daniello v. Wagner, decided by the Second Department on November 29th, makes it clear that not all grantors (or their lawyers) have received the Court of Appeals' message, suggesting that the rule needs re-examination.
