How Gamification Leads to Meaningful Workplace DEI Changes

By Heidi Turner
September 01, 2021

In contrast with past days of endless seminars and training meetings, gamification is quickly becoming one of the biggest trends in corporate training. Employees want more from their employers, and employers recognize the importance of using tools that engage employees while encouraging behavioral change. Unfortunately, the word gamification brings to mind employees pretending to work while they secretly crush candies on their iPhones in a never-ending quest to beat a game, all the while wasting time.

Gamification is the use of game elements to facilitate a learning experience. This includes everything from injecting fun into a training session to offering rewards for achieving goals, to allowing for a little friendly competition to make an important point. In the past, workplace gamification has often involved trust-building exercises at corporate retreats to build relationships, but technology has changed when and how gamification is used in the workplace.

"There's psychology around gamification," Kim Stuart, Chief Operating Officer at Conscious Inclusion Company, says. "It increases knowledge reinforcement, engagement, motivation, and inclusion. It inspires people to feel part of the process and strengthens corporate culture through team building."
